2024 Art Summary

My 2024 Art Summary

The image has a blue and green gradient background and text at the top reads '2024 Art Through the Months!' Twelve images, captioned with the months, are below, each featuring at least one of Ivy's characters. January's image shows SC Tejada, a red-haired chipmunk, looking up at the sky, which has a moon, stars, and a shooting star. February's image has Phil Ástatos, a brown bear, looking up at Leon Verdier, a chameleon, who is in a tree and holding a rifle. March's image has Justin Cepoli, a mouse, sitting on a bench at the base of a stylized mouse statue in a brightly-lit museum room. April's image shows Justin Cepoli holding a flashlight while looking around the corner at Gore Feles, a reddish-orange tabby cat, who is holding a syringe of green liquid. May's image shows Beau Tusoriano, an orange tabby cat, staring up towards the camera with fearful tears in his eyes. June's shows Michel Dupuy, depicted here as a mouse, facing away from the camera and laughing into his hands while Leon Verdier stands dripping in the rain, unamused. July's image shows Nikola DeLuna, depicted here as a lynx, posing in front of a black and green cyber-inspired background. August's image shows Tartya Hootilville, a snowy owl, staring down at something below her in shock with a wing to her mouth, against a night sky. September's image shows Leon Verdier happily sticking his tongue out in the rain against a pale green solid background. October's image shows Leon Verdier sitting on the roof of a building at night with two moons behind him. November's image shows Michel Dupuy, a dormouse, looking out a window to see a silhouetted figure crouched among plants at sunset. December's image shows Lucius DeLuna, a lynx, carrying a bleeding Cybele DeLuna, a caracal, through a flooded street against a stormy sky, with the blood stylized as vivid pink.

Content Warning: Guns, Stylized Blood (it's pink)

I like to think I’ve improved a lot over these past twelve months, so for the first time, I’ve cobbled together one of those “art summaries” to show off!

(Also, first time I’m showing off my personal handwritten font, OwlkaHand?! Yes, of course I do typography on the side, I do everything…)

Anyway, here’s the origins of each of the images I’ve used!

SC Tejada, a red-haired eastern chipmunk, looks up at the sky, which has a moon, stars, and a shooting star. It is daytime, and the moon is partially faded into the colour of the sky.

 January

This one was actually part of the set of my first ever coloured-outline pieces! Hard to believe it was only a year ago that I graduated from black outline exclusively… I mostly just wanted to draw something for The West, With Glory with a moon like this.

 February

The old character designs here really weird me out because of how old they are. Why is Phil’s head so circular? Why do Leon’s eyes look like that?? Why is Druvius the tiniest rifle ever???? Of note is that in the span of a month, I’d fully ditched the idea of blue uniforms for West Kûga in favour of traditional green.

Phil Astatos, a brown bear, sweats while looking up at Leon Verdier, a veiled chameleon, who is in a tree and holding a rifle. Subtitles indicate that Phil asks Leon, 'Can you stop?', to which Leon replies, 'No.'
Justin Cepoli, a meadow jumping mouse, sits on a bench at the base of a stylized mouse statue in a brightly-lit museum room with other works of art and large windows. The statue is carved to be balanced on its tail and holding a long string of beads.

 March

A Mouse Among Thieves is kicked off in a museum, so I thought I’d do a piece with Justin in his actual job. I couldn’t resist the foreshadowing, but… how does that statue not break at the tail?

 April

You’ve seen this one as my key art for AMAT! Considering this was made nearly 8 months ago, I think it holds up. The outline shading on Justin’s nose is a great first glimpse of the colourful shading I use now.

Justin Cepoli, a meadow jumping mouse, holds a flashlight while nervously looking around the corner at Gore Feles, a reddish-orange tabby cat, who is holding a syringe of green liquid. There are blue and red lights behind Gore, suggesting police lights.
Beau Tusoriano, an orange tabby cat, stares up towards the camera with fearful tears in his eyes. Reflected in his eyes is a bright, four-spoked 'star'.

 May

I can’t give too much information on this one, but I can confirm that it’s from TWWG. What a pretty star Beau is looking at. It took me so long to get those dang highlights correct, and the tears look a bit too opaque.

 June

Inspired by the fact that chameleons’ casques funnel water into their mouths. I’d perfected drawing water drops by now, without making their outlines too white and looking like… well… “milk”. As a side note, I’ve grown so used to Michel as a dormouse that seeing him as a mouse is jarring.

Michel Dupuy, depicted here as a striped field mouse, facing away from the camera and laughing into his hands while Leon Verdier, a veiled chameleon, stands dripping in the rain, unamused. Both of them are underneath a canopy of leaves.
Nikola DeLuna, depicted here as a lynx, poses in front of a black and green cyber-inspired background. They have one hand up to their face, forming a 'V' shape in front of their right eye.

 July

Digital character, Matrix-y background. It’s a given. Side note, this reminds me of a kids’ show, but I can’t place which one exactly? If anyone tries to make a kids’ show out of Kepia I’ll have to politely object.

 August

Yes, that’s Linda’s arm down there. It was a plot point in my old, old drafts of The Acorn Detective Agency that Linda ended up dead by Tartya’s (accidental) hand, so I had to redraw it in the new style.

Tartya Hootilville, a snowy owl, stares down at the limp arm of Linda Skáli, a Siberian flying squirrel, in shock, with a wing to her mouth. The night sky background behind them has a galaxy in the background, as well as a meteor. Linda is wearing a black ace ring on her finger.
Leon Verdier, a veiled chameleon, happily sticks his tongue out in the rain against a pale green solid background. Text beside him reads, 'What Leon is actually like 99% of the time.'

 September

When I learned that chameleons drink like this, I had to draw Leon doing it. The text there about this being what Leon actually is like is because the image before this was him standing ominously with Druvius (a.k.a. how the others see him as acting most of the time).

 October

Can you tell I’m fond of Leon? Drawn in his birth month, I made this animation where his right eye whirls around independent of his left, in true chameleon style. I didn’t quite like how it looked, with everything else being completely still, so I saved a still frame to use.

Leon Verdier, a veiled chameleon, sits on the roof of a building at night with two moons behind him. One of the moons, the smaller one, is yellow, while the larger one is purple.
Michel Dupuy, a garden dormouse, looks out the window to see a silhouetted figure crouched among plants at sunset. Michel sits at a table with a cup of coffee, an Arabic coffee pot called a 'dallah', three more empty cups, and a shallow purple dish filled with dried dates. The figure outside is crouched in front of two white irises, taking notes in a spiral-bound book. The two are in an arid area.

 November

I tried not to use my book covers for this, because obviously those are usually much nicer than my usual output. This one is technically a book cover, but it’s for something that I wrote for the sake of writing anything, not something canon, so I counted it. I’m really happy about how the sunset turned out! Also, accidental aroace flag colours.

 December

First time I’ve shown something off with what my roomie affectionately calls “Pepto Bismol blood”. I decided to make blood really striking, so it’s pink! As my little comment says, Lucius is spotless despite the chaos. Subtle indication of his demigodhood.

Lucius DeLuna, a lynx, is carrying a bleeding Cybele DeLuna, a caracal kitten, through a flooded street against a stormy sky, with the blood stylized as vivid pink. Despite the blood and dirt on Cybele and in the water, Lucius is spotless. Small white text at the bottom reads, 'I love how Lucius is spotless.'
